The virtual conference environment is new for us! What did we get right? What needs improvement? Your feedback is appreciated. LEAVE FEEDBACK Welcome to the Plant Biology 2020 Worldwide Summit! Sign-on, and get a ringside seat to some of the world’s best plant science research, often facilitated by cutting-edge technologies. That this meeting could happen at all is itself a triumph of technology. Much of this technology will continue to be explored in future ASPB conferences, expanding the traditional limits of communication, collaboration, and networking and making the research presented during these meetings available to the plant science community all over the world. At the same time, it is our intention to ensure that the human element is not left behind. We have provided ample opportunities for networking and discussion in the schedule. And we expect that these interactions will continue long after PB 2020 is over, because will need to rely on each other as the world recovers from the current pandemic and forges a more sustainable and inclusive society in which science can thrive. Everyone will have a role to play. What will you find at the Plant Biology 2020 Worldwide Summit? World renowned speakers – The program will provide a rich mix of scientific content in plenary talks and concurrent symposia Virtual posters – The online environment provides the opportunity for poster presenters to expand the content of their posters with video and other enhanced features, while continuing to network via live chat, Professional development and other topical workshops A content-rich exhibitor showcase – To help you find the tools and technologies you need for your research while visiting with vendors in real-time. Networking and social activities – A variety of structured and ad hoc opportunities for small-group networking, group discussions and fun ways to connect with fellow scientists at all career levels A Virtual Career Fair – find your next job or your new hire! All of these features can be accessed through your computer, tablet, or smartphone. Find answers to any technical questions HERE . Registered attendees to ASPB’s online conference will enjoy both synchronous (real-time livestream) and asynchronous (on demand) access . Social distancing actions taken globally due to the coronavirus pandemic have required an unexpected pivot away from our in-person conference. But in making this pivot, ASPB has taken the opportunity to convene plant scientists from around the world in much greater numbers and to explore new (for us) ways to create unique value for our plant science community. Our goal is to ensure an educational, collaborative, and participatory —but not overwhelming—experience for all Plant Biology 2020 Worldwide Summit attendees. We welcome any feedback on your conference experience as you explore this new kind of event with us! Please email info@aspb.org , tweet to @aspb and the #plantbio20 hashtag, or share your thoughts with any ASPB staff member you encounter during the conference. Plenary Symposia Organizers VIEW PLENARY SYMPOSIA Nathan Springer University of Minnesota View Biography Nathan Springer University of Minnesota Nathan Springer is a McKnight Presidential Endowed Professor in the Department of Plant Biology at the University of Minnesota. He received a PhD from the University of Minnesota in 2000 and his thesis research in Dr. Ron Phillips lab involved cloning of DNA methyltransferases from maize and analysis of anueploid-induced syndromes. Nathan was a post-doctoral research in Shawn Kaeppler’s group at the University of Wisconsin-Madison working on functional genomics of maize chromatin. He joined the faculty at the University of Minnesota in 2003. Members of the Springer lab use classical genetic, molecular genetic and genomic approaches to study natural variation for gene expression and chromatin in maize. The Springer research group has also been involved in research on imprinting, heterosis and structural genomic variation in maize. Rob Martienssen Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory View Biography Rob Martienssen Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Rob Martienssen studied Genetics at Cambridge University and obtained his PhD with David Baulcombe at the Plant Breeding Institute, Cambridge. After postdoctoral training at the University of California, Berkeley, he joined the faculty at Cold Spring Harbor in 1989. His research focuses on epigenetic mechanisms that shape and regulate the genome, and their impact on development and inheritance, as well as transposable elements, which were first discovered by Barbara McClintock at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. Recently, he has shown that small RNA, which guide histone modification and chromosome segregation in fission yeast, can also control chromosome dosage response and segregation in plants mediated by transposable elements. Dr. Martienssen’s work revealed a link between epigenetics and RNA interference that was named “#1 Breakthrough of the Year” by Science magazine for which he received the AAAS Newcomb Cleveland Award in 2003. Dr. Martienssen was made a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2006, and a foreign member of EMBO in 2011. He was appointed a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator in 2012, and has held visiting chairs at the National Institute of Genetics in Japan and the Ecole Normale Superieure in Paris. He is a co-founder of Orion Genomics LLC, a biotechnology company based in St Louis MO. Judy Callis University of California, Davis View Biography Judy Callis University of California, Davis Judy Callis is a professor at the University of California, Davis in the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology since joining the faculty as an Assistant Professor at end of 1989. She works on regulated proteolysis, mostly on the identifying and characterizing the ubiquitin system in plants and its role in several hormone signaling pathways, such as auxin and abscisic acid. She graduated with a BA from Washington University, St. Louis, MO, a Masters degree from University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, Il and a PhD from Stanford University, Stanford CA. Post-doctoral work in the laboratory of Richard Vierstra at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, started her interest and pursuit of understanding regulated protein breakdown. She is current ASPB President, an ASPB Fellow and a AAAS fellow. Catherine Feuillet Inari Agriculture View Biography Catherine Feuillet Inari Agriculture Catherine Feuillet received her PhD in plant biotechnology in 1993 followed by 10 years of postdoctoral studies and as assistant professor at the University of Zurich where she developed research projects aiming at the isolation of disease resistance genes and a better understanding of the genome structure and evolution of wheat and barley. In 2004, she was appointed by INRA in France as a research director to lead wheat genomics projects in support of wheat improvement. In 2013, Catherine joined Bayer CropScience as the head of Trait Research until April 2018 when she joined Inari, a start-up aiming at transforming plant breeding as Chief Scientific Officer. Catherine has coordinated several large national and European projects and is one of the founders of the International Wheat Genome Sequencing Consortium. She was elected th...
